The messiness of the non-physical
Have you found yourself struggling with non-physical goals? At the same time, physical goals are challenging, and you keep committed to them. As athletes, we have been working toward physical goals most of our lives. They become routine and an expected part of daily life. Where others consistently struggle to workout or eat healthy, those activities are now ingrained in us.
We see the biggest struggles of transitioning out of sport come in with the non-physical goals because many of them are foreign concepts to the lifestyle that we have led for years. When I decide to run a marathon or Spartan Ultra Beast, the races exist outside my comfort zone of power activities that I grew up excelling at. Simultaneously, I know that I can find a plan and follow it to complete those. Often, we see transitioning out of sport and moving into the next stage of life as messier and more undefined. We struggle to pinpoint a plan and commit to it. When we do select a plan, we tend to stray from it sooner because we do not expect it will work with the confidence that we have for our physical challenges. What can you do to help bring clarity and organization to your transition?
