Relays in the snow

My wife, son, and I spent the beginning of the morning doing relay “races” (although we weren’t actually racing anyone else) in the snow in our backyard. An early season snowstorm deposited 16 inches of snow over 3 days resulting in a backyard full of snow and 3 snow days to my son’s delight. We ran back and forth, wrote our names in the snow, and cleared the back patio by shoveling snow into a sled and dumping it on the far side of the yard. We exercised, worked, and had fun! The time even included some group hugs into the snow.

Parts of it were planned. Others, like the impromptu single leg takedown practice my son instigated at the end, were not. All of it was strategic to encourage outdoor activity and exercise while making it fun. How are you making your work, exercise, cooking, etc. fun? Are you incorporating others? Adding an element of competition? Or possibly, a creative flair? I remember making training more interesting in high school. In the winter, I would sled down a big hill then sprint back up carry the sled or I would use the snow in the woods to force me to run with high knees and cut around trees as defenders. As I transitioned out of my playing career, I found ways to add a competitive element to my work day by challenging myself to do certain tasks in a specific amount of time or game planning the day as a coach planning a practice.
